“…and fast-tracking safety standards”
Huge contracts with billionaire corporations for extremely expensive nuclear power, while ignoring all of the cheap solar and wind options. Oh, while skipping all safety checks, because “why not? I guess that’s what we do with nuclear power plants now!”
Fuck everything about this.
I agree with you about the problems of them wanting to skip safety standards, but you can’t just power the entire country with wind and solar, that doesn’t work because they are unreliable intermittent power supplies. You need something to cover the gaps. So either you have massive batteries that store power, and there are huge problems with that, or you have to build some other power generating system. All the other options are awful and carbon producing.
So we do need nuclear power stations. In the future maybe they would be fusion power stations but for now with the technology we have, nuclear power stations are the only viable.
The problem with my nuclear when mixed with renewables is that they take too long to turn on and off (think 12-24h), so they are not great complement solar and wind.
They are also very expensive, and take years to build, and decades to recoup the investment. Renewables are a lot cheaper, and can be built straight away, making their investments a lot less risky. They are also evolving faster than nuclear, snd becoming cheaper.
They are, S of today the cheaper power source in most of planet. It is expected that in a couple of years they won’t just be the cheapest, but they will be so cheap it will make economic sense to dismantle other powers plants and build solar/wind+ battery than to keep gas running.
Yeah you don’t turn nuclear power stations on and off. You turn them on and then leave them running forever, so their slow ramp up time isn’t a problem.
I recommend you read up on the matter because you seem fairly intelligent but you’re wrong about nuclear power.
Also you’ll notice in your comment above you didn’t actually address baseload, you just said you don’t like nuclear power. You can’t just build renewables, sometimes it’s dark and sometimes it’s not windy, and sometimes that happens at the same time. We can’t be having power outages just because it’s a calm night.
Okay I think you missed the point a little.yes you keep the nuclear power plant on all the time. Which is fine if it’s night and you need the power. But on a sunny day you end up with a reactor producing power that has nowhere to go.
You can sell the excess power to some extent. Store it by pumping water into reservoir. And a lot of what end up happening is, you dissipate the excess in huge resistors as heat.
But I agree it’s not ideal as a solution but it’s better than having brownout because there are too many clouds.
12 reactors? 12?! That’s insane
What will the Monkey Hangers do with all those??
I really wonder at what point they’ll stop throwing good money after bad.
Never. Someone is making huge profits off this expensive alternative to the cheap solar and wind farms. It’s business. It’s part of capitalism.
They’ve all been trying to force nuclear on everyone for decades, even though nobody wants it. Just build another wind farm, fucking duh.
I’ve been hearing that one for a while.
Built by Private investment. So don’t get your hopes up that we will get cheaper energy out of this.
We won’t anyway because of how energy is priced. It’s such a stupid system that even if somebody genuinely wanted to give everyone cheap power they couldn’t, the government would literally force them to charge more.
