I wish there were more people here, too. But I don’t think it can ever realistically be, nor does it need to be a competition. As long as there are a default millions of people willing to spend their valuable attention contributing to corporate ad-powered social media companies, the more socially responsible platforms like Lemmy and Mastodon will always be a niche corner of an aspirational web that at least attempts to trust and respect its users. I’d flip it around: the smallness of these mostly positive communities on Lemmy reflects how content the huge crowds at reddit, meta, twitter etc are at being surrounded by utter shit. If the last few years haven’t shown them that there are better places to spend their time online, I’m not sure what will. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m also starting to be okay with the size and scope of things over here.

For fucks sake, this is infuriating. Choosing between a young, extremely popular, highly effective congresswoman and a dying man few people have heard of, should have been the easiest choice ever for one of the most important House committees.

In the face of blatant propaganda, the best you can do is stay grounded in reality, and only rely on sources that have proven themselves to be independent, fact-based, and free from corporate influence. ProPublica and Democracy Now are the two outlets I always recommend. You won’t miss much if you read them exclusively with maybe some AP and NPR sprinkled in there.

I think it’s also important to be aware of and sometimes read the sources that consistently spout propaganda and misinformation, as long as you can keep the fact that you’re reading bullshit front of mind. Not everyone can do that naturally, but being able to spot propaganda is the best first step in defeating it.

That’s just how I approach it though, I’m sure others have better ideas.

Totally understandable. I was hesitant about it too, but to me it’s sometimes worth a premium to get something that just works, and Infuse works better than any player I’ve used in the past. To each their own, good luck!

As suggested above, I would try Infuse player. I recently switched from a Kodi/Jellyfin setup to an Apple TV/Jellyfin setup and I’m extremely happy with it. Infuse has a free trial, and then you can choose to pay a few different ways (they do have a rather expensive lifetime option, but it might be worth it). The Infuse app has no trouble playing directly from my Jellyfin server, no transcoding, even for full 4K Bluray rips, and yes it even supports Dolby Vision (which the native Jellyfin app struggles with). No hiccups, no issues with multiple audio tracks or subtitles, it’s just buttery smooth direct playback.

It also has a couple different ways of interacting with your Jellyfin library, so it feels completely seamless to me.

Call, tell them where you live, and they’ll connect you to your representative’s constituent services. It’ll only take you a few minutes, but they keep track of every call. It matters.

Same, Syncthing is amazing. I use it with Mobius Sync on iOS and have it synching my keepass, Obsidian vault, photos, and a folder for random file transfers between devices. It’s so much better, faster, and more stable than all the most popular corporate cloud providers.

For real. Academics are some of the most prolific pirates I’ve ever met. Usually out of necessity because we don’t pay them reasonably or value their work.

I hear you, and agree it’s unlikely that Lemmy will change the world. But frankly I’m surprised how little faith you have in the platform you help moderate. Why are you doing this if you don’t think what happens here matters?

For an example how I would have handled it, the Ten Forward Star Trek community did it right, in my opinion.

As I said in the next sentence, “it’s highly unlikely, but you know we’re real people here, with real thoughts and ideas.” Lemmy is the only social media I use, period. I don’t contribute to any other social media, so it’s perhaps more likely than you’re thinking, but still, like I said, highly unlikely. Why take the chance?

This comes across as an extremely heavy-handed way of controlling the conversation. I get wanting to keep things civil, but taking a massive world-changing subject completely off the table, a subject that many many many of us clearly want to talk through, is not a reasonable response in my opinion.

Who’s to say some random comment in a random post on the presidential election doesn’t come up with some incredible idea or solution? It’s highly unlikely, but you know we’re real people here, with real thoughts and ideas. You never know where that one good idea will come from, but it definitely won’t be coming from here if you shut down the whole conversation. I understand this is your instance, and you can do what you want with it, but this is a disappointing response to a very live issue.

I’ve been needing a new big game to sink my teeth into, but I haven’t played any of the other Dragon Age games. I watched the glowing euro gamer review for Veilguard and it looks amazing to me (the slightly stylized look doesn’t bother me at all). Do you think I’ll enjoy it without much context? I don’t usually buy full-priced, but I make the occasional exception for games I know I’ll play for a while…Baldurs Gate, for example.

Sweet! I only learned about real-world Sabacc after how much enjoyment I got out of the Kessel Sabacc minigame in Outlaws. Looks like there are a few cantina tables in my area, might check them out.

Yeah, I’d be all in if the headsets were small, comfortable, and didn’t necessarily block out the outside world. I think there’s a ton of potential, so I hope development doesn’t completely stall. I wear glasses, and that’s pretty much the maximum amount of hardware I can handle on my face.

Bingo. I spent a few hours playing some zombie killer game/demo with the HTC Vive back in like 2017, and while it was actually a lot of fun, it was super disorienting and I definitely knocked some stuff off my shelves by trying to stand in the middle of the room by myself. Someone also walked in without me hearing, and they got a hearty elbow to the face when I swung around to shoot a zombie behind me.

And ugh the sweat is real. After a few minutes the headset fogged up and started slipping off my face, and since that particular headset had porous foam all over it, the sweat soaked in and became gross immediately. That was the last time I used VR.
