  • I’m not remotely surprised. When I was going to school here in Canada in like Year 9, I realized all the computers at the school had a logo on them that wasn’t familiar as a computer company. It was, however, familiar as the oil company locally. All of the electronics in the school, which were fairly new, all had a logo of one of the three major companies in the area. No doubt tax write off stuff of upgrading computers and donating them to the school but the logo being on there always felt scummy as hell. It was large and prominent. They were openly advertising themselves to kids to get in their good graces before they were ever adults.

Making whole ass games was only the logical next step to target kids.

  • Delight your ears with a listen along on this deranged trip.

Friends, posters, lurkers… Lend me your upvotes. For lo, in a mere day, the doors of Lemmy shall be shuttered. Our memes cast into the abyss. Our shitposts left orphaned. Unsent. O wretched fate! O cruel, unfeeling cosmos! How shall we endure? Thirty minutes is no mere blip in the timeline of our bumbling digital existence. It is an ERA. An epoch of suffering! Civilizations rise and fall in such time! Legends are written, heroes are forged, and here I will sit, my hands trembling, no memes able to posted, no takes able to be unleashed, no silly little guys to upvote. What shall become of me? Shall I gaze into the empty abyss of my own thoughts? Speak to the people I live with?

No. That way lies madness. I shall be but a husk, a shattered remnant of who I once was, awaiting the sweet release of Lemmy’s return. And yet, even in my darkest hour, I take solace in one thing: at least I do not have to spend these thirty minutes on startrek.website, that lawless den of fools, where moderation is a myth, the admins are as competent as a warp core made of wet paper, and every discussion devolves into a petty slap fight between people who somehow all deserve to lose. If the fabric of reality must be torn asunder for thirty minutes, let it be here, and not in that cursed wasteland.

Hold fast, my fellow posters. We shall weather this storm. We shall endure this trial. And when the servers rise again, like Kahless reborn, I shall return to these lands with memes twice as cursed, takes twice as deranged, and an unbroken will! Stronger. Funnier. Hornier. Steel your hearts. Prepare to refresh your pages. Let not the darkness take you for the MEMES SHALL RISE AGAIN.

  • Maybe, but it’s still lacking all the logic I was talking about.

The twitter account stuff actually has bonuses but no real negatives. A position is usually created to deal with the engagement so someone gets hired, people see random tweets that are sometimes amusing but if they’re not you can ignore them with no effort, and the company gets to advertise while keeping it in-house and the costs way down in comparison to traditional advertising.

This decision has no positives and all negatives.

    1. If Jury Nullification is legal and allowed, then frankly covering that exact thing up is an abomination and y’all should be utterly ashamed of yourselves. Since when is Lemmy in the habit of backing an establishment while not allowing people involved to know the full picture? Genuinely shameful and disgusting behavior.

    2. Yeah, I’m not going to ever remove anything from my communities relating to that or to the violence against the CEO. There is no difference between Brian Thompson and any other mass murderer on the planet. Are you asking me to protect Hitler or Pol Pot as well from criticisim and glee over their death? No? Then I am sure as fuck not going to do it for this guy.

  • I don’t really care what you have to say here. You’ve ignored everything I’ve said to try and apply your own bullshit to it and say “be more polite”. This isn’t your world. We don’t have to follow what you believe to be the kindest and most polite way to do something. I didn’t react like it was a personal attack against me, I reacted with frustration. You are the one who actively projected this as an attack against the admins or developers. You are wrong.

I do not care what else you have to say about this topic. Your opinion doesn’t matter to me, especially when you act based off of it without ever asking for clarification. Your opinion doesn’t get to force me to phrase things in a certain way. Your opinion doesn’t give you the moral highground to lecture me on how to voice my frustration with a bullshit update so bad that even multiple admins from multiple instances behind the scenes are calling this a fucking disaster.

The internet will not fit to your own personal tastes, preferences, and sensibilities. Cope.

  • Thanks! I fucking hate it!

I post a lot and chat with a decent amount of people. Because of this I’ve regularly got 20-30+ messages in my inbox. It was bad enough that if I click upvote while typing that it would have deleted my entire message and make me start over. That’s fine. I can get over that. I can just rewire around that and just wait or cut the text before doing anything. What’s driving me fucking insane now is that instead of being able to mark messages as read and refreshing the page manually, the page refreshes automatically after marking every message as read. I have no idea who the hell thought that would be a good idea but it’s idiotic. I either have to mark everything read all at once or suffer through a refresh every single time I mark a message as read.

The other features and what not I’m sure are great but that is such an enormous downside for me that I’ve barely bothered looking at anything else. Just get frustrated with waiting for a refresh after every message and just going to YouTube or playing a game instead. I’m going to end up just using Boost exclusively for messages, something that just got leaps and bounds better due to threading messages.
