so we missed it when it started and are playing catch-up. one episode to go but man, is it just me or is this one of the best series in recent memory?
great acting - best direction. the thing i’m most stumped by is that there’s only 4 seasons. can completely see at least another season here right?
This show was not for me, and I’ve had trouble trying explain why. I made it through most of the first season and followed the rest of it via recaps from my partner, mostly.
The main problem for me was that, while none of the characters were likeable or had any redeeming qualities, I was was still supposed to find them relatable. To me, the show is saying “yes they’re super rich but at the end of the day we’re all human and have family and feelings and deserve blah blah blah,” and I’m sitting there watching and feeling uncomfortable because WHY THE FUCK ARE WE GLORIFYING THE LIVES OF THE SUPER RICH?
but I’m glad you enjoyed it! Two thumbs down from this buckaroo, though.
It wasn’t glorifying them, it was showing how they are messed up in their heads. All of them were trying to get approval from their evil father, and he never showed any love or compassion for any of them. Actually he only respected when they were evil themselves.
I didn’t like any of the characters either except for some comedy relief moments. But these guys are sick, living in their own world, separated from normal humans, which only contributes to their sick mental state.
All they cared about was more influence, money and power, and they would stab eachother in the back to get it. Sort of like kings in the past.
I prefer a show to end too early when it’s still good then to stick around too long and watch as it gets bad.
I tried it few years ago when it was only in season 2 I think and … I don’t like it. None of the characters are likable, I don’t mean that I have to like the characters to like the show, but it does make me uninterested in their … life.
I don’t see it as glorifying, but I can see how that comes across. The amazing thing about the show is that there is this tiny relatable piece in every single one of the characters - they all just want to be loved by their family. They all have an incredible bond, which they have no qualms in using to manipulate the others to get their own selfish ways.
I think it’s the tension and duality which makes the show compelling. It clearly also shows the corrupting influence of power through the various characters at various time, so I can’t agree that there’s any intention to glamourise wealth.
I cannot overstate how GOOD the writing on this show is. Some of the stuff from the last season especially just cuts so deep and true to real life arguments I’ve had. There are scenes that I don’t want to talk about for spoilers sake, but was done so well it felt like I was there.
Also CONHEAD4LIFE!!
Honestly I think it’s good where they left it. No spoilers, but it’s a satisfying arc for who ends up on top, and I feel like that last evening with the siblings and then the board meeting the next day was the perfect encapsulation of their whole relationship.
For me it’s not that I don’t particularly like the characters. I thought they were well written and it was possible to sympathise with them at certain times, despite them doing awful things.
My problem with this show, and previously In The Thick of It, is that watching people being mean to each other in a workplace environment gives me a fight/flight response 🫣 I’m sure it’s a great show with great writing etc but I’m gonna stick with rewatching The Office. I’ve gone through enough workplace stress in my life, I don’t need to sit through an extra hour of it a week during my leisure time!
