Oh man, I was going to wishlist it and wait but now I’ll have to buy it on launch week.

EDIT: Sabre Interactive understands that the Emperor’s light shields the faithful, making dark machine rites like Denuvo unnecessary. Such heretical rites only agitate the machine spirits, causing discordant whispers that play into the hands of the enemies of Man. The Omnissiah smiles upon this decision.

On the upshot, that season pass and the DLC stuff is all cosmetic only. All gameplay additions will be free for all.

I still strongly dislike limiting cosmetics so much, especially in a setting where they can mean so much. Darktide’s $20 skins pissed me right off: role-playing is 100% part of the game and that price is absurd.

Honestly, fair criticism, as it is still a $60 game and in my old timer’s brain that means everything should be unlockable through gameplay. Unfortunately, that’s just not how the market seems to work anymore, so I’ll just be glad their extra monetization is only limited to cosmetics and not gameplay stuff as well.

Yeah that’s true, you’re right. Altho, I am still skeptical of it - if you have DLC ready to go before launch… Why isn’t it in the base game?

It’s like booking a hotel: Basic price will get you a room for the night, with all the common amenities, but if you want late checkout, you’ll pay extra. Sure, they could fold that into the basic price and make it the norm, but if you know you’ll leave early anyway, you’ll be paying for something you don’t want.

The metaphor breaks apart if you look too closely - for hotels, early checkout is a convenience since they can get the room ready sooner for the next guest, so they’ll incentivise that, while the devs have already put in the work. On the other hand, the late checkout is a service of convenience while a DLC is an excitement feature, where the content is instead an incentive to pay more.

Either way, I feel like add-ons for games aren’t too different from add-ons in many other industries: “This is the basic <thing>, with the price we feel we can charge for it. This here is an extra you can have for an extra charge.”

But if you don’t pay for late checkout, you can still check out. If you don’t pay for extra DLC, you just don’t get to use whatever is in the DLC full stop

If you don’t pay for late checkout, you can’t check out late. If you don’t pay for the DLC, you can’t play the DLC. You can still check out at the normal time (which is the basic service) or play the base game, respectively.

Factorio did it perfectly. Developed a game and when it was finished 1.0 went yes that is the game state we want. Went 5 years into hiding, came back with a massive DLC, but the quality of life stuff and engine improvements all get pushed to the base game.

This seems really promising. Unfortunately, I expect they’ll still use Steam DRM, but everything I’ve heard so far is immensely promising so who know, maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll skip even that.

Steam DRM is nothing like stuff people should be aware of. Ask any modder for confirmation.

Modder here. Denuvo has absolutely no effect on modding. Steam DRM checks the integrity of the executable and also crashes on breakpoints. That said, it’s easy to remove with Steamless. Memory hacks work fine.

Edit: However, Space Marine 2 is going to use EAC, which is a kernel-level anti-cheat which prevents any modding short of utilizing or creating private hacks that may involve rogue system drivers.

Hard disagree on denuvo. If it’s no problem for you then you must have tons of experience in re. Which puts you into some 1%-ish group. Depends on the type of mods you do of course.

I do have the experience but if you attach a debugger to a non-Denuvo or a Denuvo game, then have any hacker/modder come into the room and look at the code, manipulate it or inject new code, they won’t notice the difference or face any obstacles.

Dammit, EAC may be an issue on Linux though. It’s kinda hit or miss whether a given developer will take the extra steps, particularly given the conflicting sources on just how complex it actually is. According to Valve, it’s a checkbox and dropping a file in your depot. Others claim it would require an Epic Online Services version of EAC, with all the baggage that carries, including potentially rewriting a whole chunk of your code.

Since they have competitive online multiplayer an anti-cheat is needed, otherwise the MP turns into a hellhole of cheaters. As much as I wish that this wasn’t the case.

Yes, the part the writer made up. Either they share the concerns that we see a repeat of the Helldivers 2 fun, or they reacted to an article earlier with that wording. Doesn’t matter, as I cannot see the future, I have to guess. I communicated that guess.

You seem awfully aggressive to people that don’t share your view and dare to step into your line of sight. Do you always trust the official statements?

No, but I trust what a person says themselves more than another person making assumptions based off what they said. Concerns and guesses are not valid when the person has said No very clearly. Unless your stance is “trust no one about anything” then this seems a little extreme.

You’re saying your guess has more validity than what they’re saying, and they have a very clear answer. So I’ll ask an equally silly question of you, do you always value your guess over what the sources say?

That sounds like something I can see them do. Engage the haters (me, when talking about denuvo) with the bright minded people that weren’t tricked often enough, for more publicity.
