It’s always about bringing back the old Bioware names for star wars rather than the old obsidian Kotor 2 names. Kotor 2 raised the bar even with the rushed development. Raised it so high that the mega budget multiple single game story sized MMO with Bioware disappointed, Same with the book before the game. I don’t get what about these suits and Bioware alumni seem so allergic towards Kotor 2. Mass Effect was a step back compared to Xbox era Bioware and a major step back comparison to Xbox era Obsidian. Besides David Gaider, if the name is a former major Bioware figure, my interest plummets
Regardless, new studio. They probably don’t even have a clear idea on what the narrative even is. Probably spin the wheels on asset generation, concept art, and narrative round tabling with a back and forth with LucarsArts/Disney canon approvers. Keep expectations low. 2030+. Don’t expect risks. Bioware and the old Bioware alumni still directing games besides Gaider with Dragon Age 1-3 all seem obsessed with making Hollywood knock offs with very basic morality and basic heroes journey narratives. Pretty much covering up a new hope in new paint over and over again
I want to be enthusiastic about this. I really, really do… but Star Wars has just burned me so hard this past decade announcing exciting projects only for them to never be heard from again. Remember that High Republic game? That was announced years ago now, and we’ve not heard anything since.
Abandoning stuff like 2313 and moving forward with shit like Outlaws is baffling to me.
Star Wars Eclipse was announced in 2021. It’s a Quantic Dream game, they usually take their time, deliver a polished release and don’t really talk about stuff until the release. I’d rather they take their time than release the shit everyone else does. That’s probably the worst example to use of Star Wars stuff being bad recently.
Also there are rumors that that was effectively a recruitment video which would also push it to very early stages of development. Makes sense though probably better for a large project to get a bunch of people from the start and delay development a bit at the beginning than to delay development later due to fuckery.
It’s also par for the course with recent Quantic Dream announcements.
The Kara tech demo was released March 2012 (over a year before the current game they were working on, Beyond: Two Souls released). And Detroit: Become Human gave us the corresponding game for Kara but didn’t release until May 2018. So that’s 6 years from announcement/introduction of a new game to it’s release.
Forgot about that bit, but yeah makes sense then that we haven’t heard shit since they are at best still polishing things up. If there’s one thing I can give Quantic Dream it’s that their games are generally well polished baring a few bugs (JASON!) or scattershot writing (beyond two souls).
Well at least Sam Maggs isn’t on this one.
Hopefully it’s a step in the right direction for Star Wars?
EDIT: Before you riot, my distaste with her has nothing to do with her being a woman, and everything to do with her being needlessly antagonistic to people and her being a writer on such “banger” games as Anthem and Call of Duty Vanguard.
Honestly, this shows next to nothing.
Yeah, not very helpful. Comments were hyping up the director, never heard of the guy. I’ll give it the same things I give to all the other Star Wars projects, hope and cautious optimism.
never heard of the guy
Director behind some of the best RPGs of all time. Baldur’s Gate 2, KotOR, Neverwinter Nights, Mass Effect, Jade Empire.
Oh, that’s interesting. Hope it turns out as well as the rest of them.
Yeah the only guy that really compares would be if someone like Brian Fargo was involved. Real golden era of games guy.
Fuck now I want a Wasteland 2/3 style star wars game.
Casey Hudson was the original project lead of Kotor 1 and the entire first Mass Effect trilogy. I think that’s why a lot of people are hopeful about the direction of this new game.
They dont know how to make good movies or games anymore, so not hoping for much. It actually requires emotional maturity and love for the craft.
All I want is a convenient way to play KOTOR 1. An adapter version like they did with KOTOR 2, so I can play from the couch with a controller like when I was a kid.
Was expecting the remake to finally get to know the original game… The husband is a fan and I tried to play it but couldn’t get over the graphics and gameplay. Don’t know if I should force myself to go through or just wait.
Casey Hudson alone won’t make the game good, sadly. He closed humanoid and now is making a licensed game. That likely means whoever is writing the cheque will have outsized influence in how the game is developed. Seeing as it is likely lucasfilm calling the shots, I’m not optimistic it won’t be slop.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
If it’s not D20 Star Wars RPG, we riot.
SWG was the last good Star Wars game. I’ll die on this hill.
LOL dead franchise
I will only play this if there’s a Destiny 2 crossover.
Lol
