I’ve worked in 2 different schools in the IT department and 4 others as a volunteer lecturer (I got a name tag that said Technology Evangelist) I found that putting an analog clock on the screen saver of computers in the classroom was more likely to result in the clock actually being on time.

Too many clocks in classrooms are very old or even battery powered but neglected.

I don’t think kids are dumb just they aren’t getting a world that is properly maintained by competent people that care about their work and are adequately resourced to do the whole job.

  • I thought that too. My (now windows only) computer has two M2 slots, I used one for Linux and one for Windows. One day I walked into my office having left windows running the night before and my computer had rebooted and updated, The first thing I did was try to boot into the Linux partition and it did not work.

Not taking that chance again, I now have two separate PCs on my desk.

At this point I just accept that my windows desktop is going to reboot itself and update itself every fucking night. I used to be able to leave it on for months at a time only rebooting when I felt like it and had prepared all of my open projects to be rebooted.

Now I do those projects on my Linux PC, which has to be a separate PC now because the windows updates completely screw up dual booting. Microsoft is such a shit show, I would probably only turn on that PC on the weekends except I need Windows for work.

  • I think even on balance, considering fractions of skeletons in whole people, you’re going to end up with more than one skeleton per person despite some of those people missing bones or limbs.

It’s like one sixth of a percent more than 1:1 if there are 135 million babies born each year on earth, but that’s not nothing.

  • Really dig in her heels on the idea that 50% is not equal to 1/2. Thinking she must be joking I wrote a two-page proof explaining all of the reasons why 50% is equal to 1/2 and she was more than a little bit mad at me for not letting it go…

I ended up having to appeal to her department chair who walked into the room during my class, sat down at her computer, changed my grade on that test, and said to her, “I really shouldn’t have had to come down here to do this myself. I don’t want to have to come down here again. I’m asking you to drop it.”

She didn’t say another word for the rest of that class period and was not in school the next day. For the life of me I can’t understand what the fuck she was thinking was going to happen. Math doesn’t recognize opinions or authorities outside of math and she should have known that.
