CAD:

• FreeCAD (bit clunky at times, it forces you into one specific workflow. Its free, open source and what you create with it will always be yours. Its what I use. It feels like C in programming language terms)
• onshape (feels very similar to fusion. Its a smooth experience, runs in the browser and is a nice tool. I liked it and did some cool stuff with it. Only drawback: the free only allows to store files openly, so everyone can see your designs. Kind of open source if you want, but I think files can only be opened with oshape. Its by a team that worked for solidworks. It feels more like python.)
• open s cad (you code your 3d objects. Its rough to learn and build complex parts I guess? But a pretty cool idea. Worth a try!)

SLICERS (all open source) It does not really matter, just try and pick what you like. I used them for fdm only, idk about resin.

• cura (by ultimaker, one of the older brands. Slicer is quite nice, nothing special I guess, just works quite well.
• prusa slicer (by prusa. THE printer brand I think. A bit confusion interface compared to cura I think, works great tho)
• orca slicer (based on slic3r I think? Has supposedly one of the best slicing algorithms if I remember correcly and a lot of settings. The forbidden one (baboo lab slicer) is based on this)
• slic3r (the og slicer of sorts, never tried it)

OTHERS: To control your printer (remotely if it does not offer it out of the box. I tried none of them):

• octoprint (sends live g code to your printer. Offers camera stream. Runs on a raspberry pi)
• mainsail is (controls your printer, if it runs clipper. Supposed to be one for the best I think. Runs on a raspberry as well I think?)
• many new ones have remote controll stuff build in. Prusa offer remote management, same as bamboo, sovol, some enders and anycubic ad well I suppose. Some run in the browser.

To control your printer when fiddling with it, you can send gcode to the printer over serial, if you can connect to it via usb. Can’t name a CLI tool for that from the top of my head.

There are python tools to generate 3d meshes from 2d images. Look at huggingface how to install and use it. There are also tools in the browser. Pretty cool stuff!

So I am in a vicious cycle. I start doing something, notice there is a better way, change my setup and restart. So from just Ubuntu server, I developed to proxmox. From documenting everything manuall in joplin, i am now using ansible. I started with wireguard, then tailscale with selfhosted headscale. I try to get my setup right on the first try, which i notice is stupid as I am writing. It just hinders me to make progress. I think I should rather try to get it up and running as fast as possible (and securely of cause) to make progress and fail fast maybe? And I like all the changes I made, I think they were the right choice, but its a bit tiering. And I like ansible, I just have the urge to automate absolutely everything, so I can redeploy everything right after I installed proxmox. Which is not necessary at all at this stage, idk :D Maybe someone has some tips how to overcome perfectionism?

I know about the distribution of power, that has a kind of pyramid shape, sorry for the lack of vocabulary. I have also seen videos, of cause one sided, from people that lived in China for some time and displaying their view. One very popular story is the “they paint their grass green”, which I understood as follows: There is the goal of having a certain amount of green land in the country, so each region trys to reach that goal and show the higher ups how good it is going by having green grass and hills. This is of cause a very simplified scenario, but I have read a few other things that aren’t so great. Of cause you can say the same thing about many other western and global north countries, but very few people are so emotional and strong opinionated as supporters of China, some north korea or Russia. I feel like i have not read a comment with such a strong opinion about any other country here on Lemmy.

I see that the view of most westerns is shifted from reality, but I have not read a comment that seems to see both sides of that country, it seems very extremistic.

Now when I think of China, these things come to mind:

• the Uighurs
• not quite working democracy
• extreme surveillance
• stories of people getting herassed by the police for criticising the state or being different (Naomi Wu on yt for example)
• impressive industrial development in the last few decades
• high working ethics
• creativity in engineering
• skilled labour
• high building rates of solar and renewable energy sources
• also high coal production and high building rates of coal power plants
• high censorship, as it can be seen with deepseek and other AI or media
• stories about testing radioactivity on a village
• striving for higher environmental regulations in the industry
• affiliation with Russia, that invaded Ukraine (after the Nato got closer of cause, which might be seen as a provocative move)
• affiliation with north korea, which is a different conversation
• their problem with Taiwan and tsmc
• hard working conditions in factories (owned by western companies sometimes, but the government is supposed to protect the citizens in my view)

Now this is of cause not at all everything and I am aware its a view fuelled by western media. But if half of those things are true, its still not going great.

I don’t want to talk China down, I want to understand why so many people in this space are pro china, when I see the government as pretty critical. I know the us is putting a ton of effort into discredit other forms of government or markets, and there are for sure a few points in this list that is heavily influenced by them.

I literelly don’t know which “side is right” in this argument. In a country where there is propaganda and social media is strictly moderated by the government and not a lot of independent journalism (like YouTube or blogs even get pressured to shut down) and which has a social score controlling your life and thougs - how would one make a actually independent and fair survey? There is no democracy, so why turn against it if you have no way of changing it?

Of cause we are a bit brainwashed by the west and Chinas enemies and I think trump helped a lot to remove the elusion of a “good and strong america”. But it still feels like the people are more free in the west, we have democracy and solid education and independent social media and journalism which is very important to me.

And its very impressive what China achieved in the short amount of time, compared to the west, industrially speaking. But socially (like what the government does) I really would not want to live there at all.

I feel like many people here on Lemmy have just the same black and white thinking of “china good, murica bad”, which is maybe just as delusional as all the MAGA idiots.

Plus there are many other western countries that are quite solid and doing well mostly, which often get overlooked in this debate

That resolves my confusion. I was wandering what is going on, if its a meme or what. But that’s actually pretty funny. Its a way to gatekeep kernel dev for people who are willing to put in effort, which shows it’s important to them making commits more serious I guess? Like it hinders people to do the AI spam shit that curl reported, on the other hand it also hinders getting into Linux dev a bit by making it more complicated than just a little pull request

Caddy is nice and super simple. Only issue I had was: it can’t control domains if its behind a VPN. I use hetzner and they have an API, but the feature is not native to caddy so I would have had to rebuild caddy as an docker image. Rather annoying tbh, because everything else is great about it

I used the sub feed for years. But then they decoded to remove Videos from the feed, that they thought are not interesting to me. This actually pushed me to use the recommendations… I kind of hate what it is right now, because you can notice the trash that gets flooded into my recommendations. Its not the niche content I have in my sub feed

The local domain does not get resolved how it should, i hoped someone here might have hosted ha in proxmox themselves or ran into a similar problem, or could give me a hint what to check
