Understandable, but it’s a significant diifculty in migrating fully to Linux when PDFs are used everywhere and there are solutions that work well on Windows. This is one of the few things I will get my wife’s Windows laptop for.

OpenSUSE doesn’t get recommended enough. Great distro I’ve settled with permanently after trying all the popular ones.

I’ve been through a lot of options trying to get the same functionality you mentioned. I’ve never found a single app that works particularly well. I’m surprised the state of PDF apps is so poor in Linux. Others have mentioned a bunch of apps and each fails in some major way. I’ll come back and check this comment section later for new suggestions for my own sake too.

The world is always on the edge of destruction. There’s always an economic crisis, humanitarian crisis, war, natural disaster, etc going on all the time. Our parents lived in the end of days with the threat of imminent nuclear war, endlessly rising violent crime and endless spread of HIV.

The real problem is how news is reported and talked about. How society panics and turns on each other on public forums. How all sense of community is lost and individual consumption is all that matters.

I’m fighting against this by staying off all social media other than Lemmy. All my news comes from a small number of curated sources, and only in RSS feeds (so I get them in time order rather than bullshit news site headlines prioritisation). I use a lot of keyword filters on Lemmy and in my RSS news (Covid, Trump, Biden, most American news, anything that is meaningless to me is blocked immediately).

Also, embrace Nihilism. All of this is meaningless. If the world is going to end, then tomorrow is as good a day as any for it to end. Do what you value in the time you have. Maybe even stop following news completely. Build tolerance and acceptance in your mind.

Then you get power-creep. TTK just gets shorter and shorter as everyone gets stronger and the game becomes a twitch shooter to get the first shot in. You have to balance by bringing some things down a notch.

Normal screen is close to 720. Boosting up to 1080 has little benefit at this size and negatively affects performance and battery.

Also don’t forget retro games.

Even new games can be run on midrange hardware if you don’t crank up the settings.

People want big numbers and companies watch to sell the latest stuff. No one gives a platform for advocating low budgets, cheaper hardware and patient gaming.

AI has been most useful for tech support for me. I wouldn’t have been able to switch to Linux completely if AI didn’t instantly find solutions for me, rather than being told by the community to read tomes of documentation.

I also use it a lot to find how to get office apps to do what I want.

I’m famous at work for being a poet, when I actually just ask AI to write a short witty poem.

You can use image generators to make nice personalised cards to share on special events.

AI can make mind maps and things like that if you tell it what you want.

I think this is good advice.

NAS is not a product for normies, so there doesn’t seem to be huge demand on the secondhand market. So that works out better for buyers and you can usually pick up a pretty great deal secondhand.

Linux Mint is the common suggestion and a solid option.

I tried a lot of distros myself and I’m 10 months into switching to Linux. My personal suggestion would be OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.

Synology NAS. I think it is a DS220+ or something like that.

You can make a DIY NAS with an old cheap PC. Or pay a premium for Synology and they make things a bit easier (although setup can still take quite a learning curve if you don’t know about this stuff).

3. I used to download directly to my phone and watch there. Then I got a NAS and started copying from my phone to the NAS. Then I set up download software on the NAS to have it always on. Then got Plex set up. Then the Arr’s (although these are janky and I end up doing a lot of manual additions).

I would highly suggest getting a NAS and playing around with it. Self hosting is complicated, but I got it as a “dumb” network drive on my LAN. Then slowly I started adding on different Docker containers and added to it. Each setup was a painful learning process of errors and troubleshooting, so don’t try to do everything in one go.

You don’t even need to be a pirate for self hosting. You can buy dirt cheap physical media on eBay and rip it to make a pretty huge personal library on the cheap.

We have Linux workstations at work…and these can only be used to access a remote desktop of a Windows 10 virtual machine. 👍

I came to Lemmy just looking for a Reddit alternative. I think this is a superior forum system with user scoring and nested comments. But I do love that it is open and federated and I’m glad to be rid of Reddit completely.
