I don’t need to understand IP addressing subnet routing to go to a website. Why should I need to understand a file and folder structure to find an old tax document?

You use an interesting example- personally, I feel like while files and folders have their place, I prefer they be part of the background and not presented to the user. Take photos, for example. If I’m looking for pictures of my dog, I don’t want to go into the 2022 folder, then the August folder, then look through all those files, back out into 2022 then go into the September folder, etc. I just want to type ‘dog’. Or pick from a dropdown list of common tags, or anything other than digging through files and folders.

Am I in the minority, thinking that the London Underground is actually pretty amazing? Yeah- Square and level are two different things. I can get a cube and rotate it any way, opposite faces will still be square to each other (technically parallel) despite not being level.

Interestingly, two perfectly vertical walls cannot be square to each other.

The router is set as a subnet router, that is how I am able to access other machines on my lan remotely.

I don’t want to, and sometimes can’t, install tailscale on every device I want remote access to.

So I may have duplicate routes- Does that explain the behaviour in my original post? And how would I go about avoiding that?

I could turn off subnet routing, and only turn it on when needed, but I’ll be putting up a bunch of other services that will want to talk to each other- I’m assuming this will break whenever I turn subnet routing on.

I have a commercial VPN, but I am not connected. What tinkering did you have to do?

I set up subnet advertisements by doing tailscale set --advertise-routes=192.168.1.0/24. I did not touch ACL.

The home PC is Windows, the context menu for the tray app give the option to ‘use tailscale subnets’ which is enabled- I assume this is the equivalent of accepting advertised routes.

From the home PC, tailscale ping 192.168.1.2 returns a pong, from the tailscale IP. tracert fails.

You don’t necessarily need to get two straight away, though. If you’ve been a couple times and used the hire shoes, sweet. You’re getting into it, you reckon you’ll probably keep going, time to buy some shoes. I’d actually advise against it. Climbing shoe rubber varies from soft to really bloody soft, and you dragging it all over the wall wears it through really quick.

So I’d suggest spending quite a few sessions in those hire shoes, really focusing on your footwork. When you can confidently stick your feet first go while climbing, and not have to adjust your feet constantly, you’re ready for your own shoes. Shred someone else’s until you are confident you can make yours last.

I understand you are trying to simplify things, and I appreciate that we, a hobbyists, need to do this to open up the field to more people. Accessibility is a great thing, but we do need to make sure that potential Roemann examples are prevented from establishing themselves in the governors ethos. Simple is good, but paradoxically, you need to have a thorough understanding of the more complex parts of this hobby before you can simplify it. To this day, they are still cautious when trying to simplify the pressure transducer startup sequence- and they’re using the more modern Reeistack implementation. Safety first, people. Understand what you’re messing with, because stray glycemic bonded couplings will absolutely kill you.
