I had beef last weekend in the form of my partner’s leftover canned Italian wedding soup. I think the prior time was a few months earlier when a takeout order was screwed up and my fish sandwich turned into a cheeseburger.

I try and avoid beef because of the environment and because of cute cow videos. But, if it would go to waste otherwise, I’ll go ahead and eat it.

Ten years ago I got caught by surprise bacon in frigging Pennsylvania. I’d done the “make a vegetarian meal out of sides” thing while visiting my parents.

The restaurant named all the cheeses in 5-cheese macaroni and cheese but didn’t mention that bacon was also mixed in. My mom parent-pressured me to not send it back and I ate it, suffering the gastrointestinal consequences later.

I try to only get gas at one specific local gas station that doesn’t do ads.

You could start not knowing how to do things, give slower answers, just give bad customer service. Or ask her if whatever she’s trying to do can wait until she gets home to get computer.

I know the feeling of wanting to help, it’s part of why I became a librarian. I also know the pain of old folks coming in and asking the same questions. I had one lady, really sweet, that would come in and ask for the phone numbers to maybe 3 businesses a day. Like, we’d show her how to look it up, we’d walk her through it on a public terminal, she’d still ask us again the next day. It gets frustrating and you pick your battles.

At least I could go home after a shift and stop being the tech-knower. It doesn’t sound like you get to and that sucks.

I did like working in an open office back in a previous career. I did QA and was integrated with a team of devs. It was lovely to turn to the person whose code I was testing and ask for clarification on a behavior. There really was a lot of teamwork facilitated by the lack of privacy.

The office had small rooms with doors where you could make phone calls without distracting everyone.

I finally blocked my mom’s phone number earlier this month. It’s only taken me 7 years since she blew up at me in a way she couldn’t/wouldn’t take back.

It can be a slow journey and you might question it as you go, but it’s worthwhile. And more people than you might expect are estranged from their families. I used to worry that my IRL acquaintances and friends would judge me for it, but nope.

That’s effectively what I had as an undergrad and it was lovely. Wednesdays were (mostly) reserved for labs, so if you weren’t taking chemistry or another class with a lab, you had Wednesdays to sleep in. I rather miss that.

Technically, it’s not been my municipality that’s charged me, but those around me and where I work. I don’t vote there. My town didn’t exist when the people I’m researching were making records. And at the state level, it comes up every few years but dies in committee. Last time was in 2020, when it died due to the pandemic changes everyone’s focus. I’ll ping my local congresscritter and see if it can be revived–the person advocating for change recently retired, sadly.
