Everyone in mine chooses a charity that gets donations in lieu of expensive gifts. We do very simple $10-20 gifts so we can still have the exchange and unwrapping process together as a family but the vast majority of funds go to better causes. If any of us need a thing, then we’ll buy that thing ourselves. Takes the guess work out of it all.

Naturally the kid-o’s still get absolutely spoiled.

I worked for a newspaper overseeing delivery drivers, one of which was regularly hotboxing his car while waiting for his route to be printed. He wasn’t subtle and he was always a little out of it. My bosses said it wasn’t our problem because technically he was a contractor, not an hourly employee. His route took place around 2 AM so with empty roads it hadn’t really been a problem, but I didn’t want indirect blood on my hands when it invariably DID become a problem.

So I called in a suspicious driving report after he left the warehouse one night. The next night his route was being done by someone else. I worry that I caused him long term trouble by involving the police, but I try to balance that against the potential trouble of a crash.

Idk, I don’t regret my choice, but I do still feel conflicted when I think on it.

It’s pretty lame to use the (imperically correct concept) of, no ethical consumption under capitalism to blanket absolve you of willful, informed choices. Humans all eat approx the same amount of calories, but the production of said calories are far from equal. This is such a colossal cop out. Without question corporations and individual billionaires produce more pollution by several magintuedes of individual people. But even that is a drop in the bucket between the deforestation, the years of transporting food for livestock and the final transportation of end product meat to the world population that can be fed on plant based protein.

Save this line for plastic straws and other frivolous demonization from those in private jets. But don’t use it as a thought terminating cliche aginst the single biggest source of historical human made climate change.
