My experience with Whataburger is that the food is mediocre, and if it weren’t for bad service, they’d have no service at all. In fact, there’s one Whataburger that I have failed to eat at twice because no one came to the counter both times I tried.

Not to mention the tracking (ok, you mentioned cookie notices, but not the actual tracking) that will ultimately impact your social media feeds.

It’s usually not worth the risk.

Your state can make laws that are more protective than the federal regulations. California does this frequently. Occasionally, it even trickles to other states because many companies do not want the burden of meeting different state regulations, so they just work with the one that works everywhere (assuming the market is big enough).

So… What can you do? Well, a month ago, I would have reiterated how important down-ballot voting is, but it’s a little late for that now. The voting populace has spoken.

Now what you can do is donate to causes that you support. Put pressure on your representatives. Write letters, make calls, etc. It will be exhausting. You will feel like you’re getting nowhere, but you never know what will get through.

It’s why everyone I know is so upset by the election. Not because “we” lost. That’s sad, but (hopefully) not the end of the world. It’s because we just got signed up for at least four years of constant effort and perpetual vigilance, just to keep the country from falling apart.

Yeah, I definitely remember when they started showing things I didn’t ask for, and I thought “I don’t like that”, but I stuck around because I could ignore posts I didn’t care about.

It took a little while, but I eventually started to play “how far can I scroll before I get something I didn’t ask for?”

Shortly after that, I realized I actually had to start playing “how far until I get something I did ask for?”.

Once I realized that, I cut back significantly. I still go from time to time when I’m stuck waiting in line or something, but it broke my daily habit. I miss what it used to be, but I certainly don’t miss what it is.

The transition from analog to digital really hurt my desire to watch OTA TV (you caught me! I’m not under 25).

With analog broadcast, any weak signal or interference produced a little bit of static, but you could still see and hear what was being said. With digital, any weak signal means dropped frames and silence or weird glitches. You completely lose what’s happening. Even with a powered antenna, I have frequent issues with weak signal. I could probably try to get a rooftop antenna installed, but there’s no guarantee it would be any better. It’s just easier to find other entertainment at this point.

As a hydrocarbon enthusiast, I’m going to have to say it’s not really optional.

That assumes you can unplug it. Most devices I own have the camera built right into the device, and it can sometimes be hard to find an option that doesn’t include it. I have a Webcam cover on my desktop and laptop.

I haven’t seen one that would work for my phone, but if someone has hacked my phone, I probably have bigger issues.

So, if I grab an item off the shelf and browse around the store for a while, is the price going to be the price currently displayed or the price when I grabbed it?

If it’s the current price, what’s the point of a price tag? If I can’t actually know the price until checkout, then showing me the price is kind of a useless bit of data. I also suspect that the “speak to a manager” types would make that a major headache for stores.

If it’s the price when I grabbed it, how are they keeping track of that? I see two ways of handling that: one requires that you use their app to shop, and the other requires cameras and “machine vision” that are still unreliable, at best. The former seems more likely, but I doubt either is going to sit well with customers.

Edit: someone pointed out that it might not actually display a price, and you’d have to scan it to get your price. Kind of like the first option, but I think it’s going to turn off less tech savvy customers.

I haven’t seen that aspect addressed in any articles about the “feature”.

Thanks! It’s surprisingly difficult to get Germans to correct me on things. Most of them are just happy that I can speak it at all, so they tell me not to worry about the little stuff. 😂
