I’m not going to make a redundant post, but I thought this quote in The Guardian was of note:

The German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, said on Tuesday: “I assume that we are now witnessing the final days and weeks of this regime. When a regime can only maintain power through violence, then it is effectively at its end. The population is now rising up against this regime.”

It’s time to play everyone’s favourite game: Was he referring to Iran or the U.S.?

Quite naive either way. Oppression works quite well. And we have history and also multiple current regimes to show for it.

Internet was cut, we will see who comes out on top even the lights turn back on. The oppression already killing thousands, or the revolting and demonstrating citizens.

It’s not the first time Iran had demos.

Protests are happening here at scale; we just don’t tend to burn cars and throw Molotovs. Give it time.

There’s a bit of “we’re more civilised” to how you worded that. Might not be how you meant it, though.

I’ve seen videos of Americans grappling with this during interviews at ICE protests from this weekend. Some of them are getting pushed to their limits.

Understandably, though, people generally don’t want to hurt others. So it’s going to take a while before people start breaking down to that outcome. I think everyone just hopes something will change before push comes to shove.

TBH I was overly brief there. As things get worse and worse it seems pretty inevitable the complacency will dissipate. Unfortunately, the other half of America is onboard, more organised and has the levers of power, so it’s most likely too late now.

The Iranian thing might not work either, depending on what the armed factions do. So far they’ve been obedient, and the latest is that they’ve forced everyone back home pretty well. It’s more that people don’t want to get hurt.

So does he just mean the slightly greater tariffs, or is he actually planning something else?

I would hate for anyone to get wrecked over TACO.
