I think so much about it is awesome (visuals, design of ships and sets, music, etc.) but maybe due to lack of repeated exposure to the movies as a child I don’t feel much about them. The modern movies were especially meh, since they all feel like they are trying to recapture the feeling of people who saw the originals in the cinema in the late 70s and 80s, but without doing anything new. I did quite enjoy the Fallen Order game and will probably play the follow up at some point too though.

I am very excited for Pop OS to get the new Cosmic desktop. Not really a specific feature but an entirely new DE that is quite different from the others and built from the ground up in Rust. Hopefully the first version won’t be totally broken and full of bugs!

Still checking Reddit a bit, but mostly because I’ve been following the war in Ukraine there a lot. Not checking other subs as much and installed Lemmy Connect, which makes Lemmy nicer to use than Reddit

People have burner Reddit and Twitter accounts for posts or votes they think could bite them in the ass, so why wouldn’t they do the same on Lemmy?

Nah, it’s not that it’s gotten more expensive, it’s that most of the films are shit or otherwise unsatisfying. Maybe a combination of the two? :)

Of the films I’ve seen at the cinema recently, the last one I remember really enjoying was Joker (which is not even recent), and the most recent one I mostly enjoyed, but then it had a shit cliffhanger ending instead of feeling like a complete film in its own right. I was literally saying to my friend before the film started that Dune pissed me off because of the absolutely shit ending, and then the same fucking thing happened. I don’t go to the cinema and pay $15-20 for the ticket to come out feeling like I watched half a season of some Netflix show. I could have a month of Netflix for the same money, watch what I want at my own convenience and pause/rewind if I need the toilet or want to check something.

I still like going to the cinema, but I feel like the movies have got to be more varied, more surprising, and fucking end properly instead of teasing a second part in a fucking year. I would love it if they were more respecting of my time and didn’t run on for three fucking hours too. I’d love more movies like Terminator 2 where there is zero fluff and the whole thing ends in 2 hours? That’s what the cinema is for!

Yes! I was just reading a post from the authors of Lemmy on lemmy.ml, and noticed I was not logged in. I assume that because lemmy.ml is another instance, I can’t log in with my usual lemmy.world credentials, but since it is federated I should be able to post, correct? However, I am not sure how, and I think a lot of people would just try logging in normally, since it’s just Lemmy, right? Lemmy.ml might be safe, but I think it could be possible to confuse people into entering their password for fediverse sites on malicious instances, which steal their credentials. It’s a little bit confusing to noobs like myself to be honest.

An app that can manage credentials and post properly across compatible instances and show informative messages to notify the user if and why they cannot post would be very useful, managing multiple accounts seamlessly even more useful!

It’s definitely good to have people like you investigating the backgrounds of key developers, as there might be ulterior motives behind them developing open platforms that compete with established Western companies outside of loving the free web and open source. Thank you!

However, I wonder how many opinions we disagree with would be unearthed by doing this kind of research on every core developer of Chrome, Windows, MacOS, Google or whatever. I think you would find a lot if you get people to air their honest opinions. In today’s climate, if these people were open about certain opinions they might hold (not saying they do, but statistically it’s likely some do) they would just be fired, so it’s easy for large corporations to shake damage to their reputation from having certain staff members. For OSS it is a bit harder, since although developers can be pushed out, and software can be forked, it’s all open and it’s harder to understate the contribution to the source code etc. that such a person could have contributed.

It does kind of suck when you hear that developers working on software you like have wildly different worldviews to your own, but sometimes you have to put things in perspective. Having said that, if this guy is the only developer I might feel less than happy about using Lemmy instead of Reddit.
