Lemme share the tea for anyone who isn’t aware:
- Owl house is a show by Dana Terrace that ran on Disney
- It slowly developed into big pro-LGBTQ themes
- Disney panicked, cancelled the show, claimed it was unpopular despite excellent ratings
- Dana Terrace left with a bunch of others to form an independent studio
- Their first show (Knights of Guinevere) features a floating amusement park that rains garbage all over the workers below, and robots that have orbs on their heads that produce a silhouette strikingly similar to that of Mickey Mouse
I liked that although Knights of Guinevere was clearly ragging on Disney, it felt like it wasn’t just a cathartic trauma dump from Dana Terrace and crew — it was actually being used to say something meaningful. It’s a good sign when the pilot episode of a show has such a strong sense of themes.
I’d heard a lot of hype when the pilot was released, but didn’t get around to watching it until I randomly thought “I wonder what Dana Terrace is up to nowadays? Hopefully she’s working somewhere better than Disney, because surely there must be someone with power out there who recognised how Disney was squandering her potential”. When I saw that it was her and some of the Owl House team who made Knights of Guinevere, that caused me to immediately go watch it. The only disappointment was that we don’t know when new episodes will be available, but hopefully things will be regular once we do start getting episodes.
Does anybody know if knights of Guinevere is kid appropriate?
It absolutely is not. The swearing alone would make it inappropriate for kids, but one of the scenes literally has someone using another person’s intestines as a leash. It’s an excellent pilot, but not for kids like The Owl House was.
We only have one episode but so far it’s not exactly young kid appropriate… but it’s not fully adult animation either. The limited gore is slightly disturbing but technically from something comparable to a robot and while it does have some swearing it’s not often.
From my individual perspective as a parent, mine watched it and I’d say around 10 or so, you’d probably be okay. Best practice in my opinion though is always going to be to watch it yourself first and see how you feel.
Not for young kids, there’s blood and violence and language and so on
On a scale of 1 to Demon Hunter, what are we talking?
Demon hunter is like a 6 on my scale lol
Demon Hunter is fairly tame. Maybe the top of the list should be Ninja Scroll or Berserk or Elden Leid or Urotsukidōji.
Elfen Lied? I swear the only thing I remember about that anime was the controversy about its gore and themes.
Oh yeah, a TON of gore and naked bob/vageen. I loved it when I was a teen but haven’t seen it since. I could do with a rewatch!
Yeah it’s just barely gorier than your standard shonen.
For children’s media? I’m curious what a 10 is
Watership Down
I was assuming just animation in general. Something like grave of the fireflies or takopi, parasyte etc.
Is Owl House mainly a kids show? It seems like it.
Same question for Knights of Guinevere? Kids, YA, a bit of both but also interesting for adults?
Thank you for sharing this!
The dystopian future Disney would love to have.
Loving the irony of posting this to a comm whose branding is literal AI slop 🤭
Maybe a little, but I think it fits pretty well, if you look at this from a “fuck copyright” angle. It’s easy to see the problems with what Disney is doing here and in general.
What’s the context to this?
My guess is this:
Seems they’re adding games and some kind of AI TikTok to the service.
gross.
Who the fuck is asking for that?
People are using AI to create videos of Disney properties or in the style of Disney properties, and corporations other than Disney are making money off that. They want people doing that behavior on their platform, making them money.
I bet they also hope to ultimately corral all fanart into spaces they directly control.
Investors
Shareholders need more profits. So, shareholders.
Once again - blame the Dodge brothers (yes, that Dodge).
No one, they need a reason to raise subscription prices!
Tech bro startups.
I don’t know what The Owl House is. But from what I can gather I can now watch season one for free?
With piracy, you can watch all seasons of everything for free.
Plex, Stremio, Kodi and Cloudstream my beloved.
Jellyfin, my one true platform
They’re all on the high seas and they’re all excellent.
I have absolutely no clue how to parse that title. What situation? Who has a positive view? Just what?
it’s the Disney+ jammed in there
simply replace it with “Disney’s” and it makes more sense.
Massive capitalist media conglomerate is pro ai?? Shocked Pikachu
White cis male attesting Owl House rocks, and yes, I did pirate it. Much Love.
Um, for those of us only just now finding out about this situation, what’s the AI issue here? Did they pirate some of Dana’s work with their AI, or is she inherently opposed to AI and Disney is just using it in general and that’s why she’s angry?
Full details: some people glean implications from people’s posts, I just want to clarify: I don’t care about AI, I’m just lost on what’s happening here (I only just discovered Dana Terrace exists after only just recently watching the owl house and being told about her other works, so I’m curious about if her stuff is being pirated by Disney via whatever AI stuff they’re doing)
It’s more or less in response to this https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/digital/disney-plus-gen-ai-user-generated-content-1236426135/
No clue what Disney is thinking here.
Beyond the implications to artists, people are going to get around any guardrails you can set up and when they do it’s going to be on every news outlet and they’ll all be saying that Disney officially approved use of its IP on these platforms.
People will immediately figure out how to make porn or Elsagate-type shit and Disney will get a bunch of angry parents asking why little Timmy was able to make videos of Goofy butchering and eating Donald Duck while completely naked.
Exactly, that is just going to happen, it’s going to gain a lot of traction no matter how good/bad it is, and Disney is going to be implicated because now its ‘official’.
Right now we are getting age verification everywhere. So this might very well become a adult only feature. Maybe a children version that is restricted to a symbolic interface.
I think they are trying to frontear new legal ideas regarding copyright law. That the IP still belongs to the platform/corporation after it went through a generative AI.
This sucks from an artist/worker pov. This sucks from public domain pov. But I think it’s reachable goal, especially for Disney.
